Reporting & analysis

The Journal

The Journal examines changes in dress expectations, clothing and everyday style. Use the topic filters to find the stories that interest you, then check each article's event date and sources. Our evergreen guides answer recurring wardrobe questions; Journal articles explain a particular development and what readers can reasonably take from it.

What the Journal is — and is not

Every Journal piece starts from a verifiable development — a reported change in workplace dress expectations, a documented shift in how a garment is made or worn — and ends with what it can reasonably mean for an ordinary wardrobe. Sourced reporting comes first; interpretation is labelled as interpretation.

How is the Journal different from the guides?

  • Journal articles explain a particular development, with its event date and sources, and what follows from it.
  • Evergreen guides answer recurring questions that do not depend on the news — start with what smart casual means if you want the foundation.
  • Personal opinion appears rarely, and only where the reasoning is laid out for you to judge.

Three streams organise the archive: Style & Culture follows how everyday dress norms shift; Work & Dress Codes tracks what workplaces actually ask of clothes; Trends in Practice tests current trends against real wardrobes and real budgets.

Dates matter here. Each article distinguishes the event it covers, the date it was published, and any substantive update — so check those on the piece before acting on it. What we will and will not publish is set out in the editorial standards.
